This is the formal picture from my Falcon Award presentation, in the fall of 1973, by the Commandant. General Vandenberg was very gracious in presenting the award, and gave me special permission to display it in my quarters, which was quite a departure from cadet regulations.
It was much better than the aftermath of my Spaatz presentation. I took my test for the last time just two weeks before I reported for basic summer at the Academy, so when I passed, my CAP squadron commander notified National to send it to Colorado. I was presented it by General Walter Galligan at noon meal announcements and got to eat lunch with him on the staff tower (only time). When the upper class realized they were standing at attention for a doolie my life became a living hell of extra bracing, inspections, and general harassment for about a week. The price of fame, or infamy. |
