Class of 1975 Reunion Notes

Go/No Go Decision on Deferred 45th Reunion in 2021
as presented to the Class of ’75 Leadership Council
by Jim Carlson

Based on what we’ve seen in our Zoom discussions (and post-meeting notes), the consensus appears to me that having a class reunion this year at the Academy is virtually untenable.  We don’t have the legacy clout that the Class of ’70 has in terms of their Golden Anniversary (nor it seems the donor clout) to make our 45th makeup reunion happen.  Then there is the insurmountable task of squeezing into the already full field of other scheduled reunion classes if we want to have a get-together during the traditional reunion schedule with a home football game.

Additionally, with the narrowing thresholds of assistance that we get from the AOG in reunion planning (seems to decrease with every reunion) due in part to the ever-increasing number of classes, having one even in a non-traditional season would likely incur meager support from what seems to me an overstretched AOG staff with dwindling resources (but I could be wrong about that last part).

Having a non-Academy reunion would be a heavy lift, even with a 3rd party doing the logistics.  First, we have to agree upon a venue.  Then the timing.  There is also the fact that life-as-we-knew-it is no longer the world we live in with the pandemic, its concomitant restrictions, independent feudal mandates/non-mandates by each state and municipality, and the mindset of people around us (or ourselves) regarding vaccinations and masks and other PPE and distancing guidelines.

I’m concerned about timing as well.  If we decide a class reunion, we need to start last month.  It’s not impossible to begin now, but I don’t know if any of us has the time, energy, or the will to take on some of the larger tasks, meetings, decisions, and other non-trivialities involved in such an endeavor.  If we could clone several Mark Wellses, Jeff Hacketts, Scott Hentes, and Bruce Mitchells (Reunion Chairs), then I would be happy to delete the previous sentence. I don’t know who chaired our 10-year reunion.

I’m sure there are other significant reasons that might dissuade us from taking the class reunion route.

If we don’t have a class reunion this year, we can strongly focus on our 50th.

Additionally, a not insignificant factor this year is the number of classmates who have their 50-year high school reunions this year.  Those events will impact attendance at whatever date we may choose to hold our class reunion.

Based on the number of squadron that have already begun work on having individual squadron reunions, I would encourage the rest of the squadrons to plan their own squadron reunions this year (if they are so inclined) and celebrate every year until our own Golden Anniversary to keep the spirit alive.

Hello Jim

I would like to propose "not a reunion" at the Army Game in Dallas Nov 6

* Easy to get tickets
* Game tickets and hotel rooms will be available
* "Probably" not snow.

Rich Chanick

Jim,

If no one else has suggested this - how about 9/11 for the 20th
anniversary with the Air Force-Navy game being moved up to this date at
Navy.  Reunion in DC and game in Annapolis.

Even if we don't have an official reunion, we should have an unofficial one at the tailgate and game).

Latest inputs from the rest of the Squadrons:

CS01  Tug McGraw
CS05  Curt DeVries
CS06  Dave Wallace
CS07  Mark Modrich
CS11  Marty Stytz
CS12  Butch Byrd
CS17  Dave Sprenkle
          •      All in favor of deferring a class reunion until our 50th.
          •      All in favor of having at least 1 video-conference for CS-17, mostly favoring June.
          •      Also there were suggestions for meeting at Chex’s house! (I’ll offer my home as well, in Parker, CO).
          •      All in favor of requiring covid vaccinations for in-person meetings, except 1 (me).
          •      All in favor of appointing Tom Fraley to be our reunion POC (we never heard from Tom, perhaps he’s on a beach in Puerto Rico).
CS27  Al Stoddard
CS29  K.C. Schwarz
          •      Dallas for the Army game...logistics fairly uncomplicated (fly or drive) plus decent hotels.
CS36  David Hickman
          •      As alternatives, I like WPAFB and Las Vegas.  I'd add Patrick AFB or Eglin in FL to the list, depending on the time of year.
          •      USAFA is looking less appealing for a variety of reasons. USAFA's main appeal was that Bill Lyerly's family wanted to intern his ashes there during the reunion and for the memorial that would have transpired for him at such a reunion. I've known Bill since HS and we flew out together prior to starting BCT. His family will do the internment and a smaller memorial in early June if the reunion will be elsewhere or not at all. Once we get past 2021, the idea makes less and less sense. One advantage of FL is the state is completely open now.

AGENDA and Notes

a.     Reunion Yes/No
CS-03  will pulse the squadron; Ohio will open depending on cases
CS-08  generally in favor of the traditional venue/   (not necessarily a football game)
          CS-09  50% not interested
CS-16  10 or 11 are up for it; anywhere
CS-20  Wait until the 50th; Squadron reunion in September
CS-22  9 of 11 are up for it  (if we have a reunion to see each other, but wearing masks?)
          CS-25  Tepid responses; let’s target 50th
          CS-31  8 or 9 OK if right location/date
CS-33  will pulse the squadron;  more focus on 50th; not averse to other locations
CS-37  Tepid responses; let’s do a squadron reunion (Hente, Bryant, Marshall high school reunion)
          CS-39  Same as CS-33
b.     When
          Depends on location
c.     Where
Wright Pat (before Oct); Dave Tillotson is Director of Museum
San Antonio  (no earlier than mid-Oct)
          New Braunfels
          D.C.  Baseball game
          Las Vegas
          Dallas Nov 6 (Chanick, Burling)
d.     Vaccinated/Unvaccinated
Runs the gamut from “let’s let everybody come” to “wear a mask or don’t expect hugs – and stay 6 feet away!”

CS-35 Reunion Inputs

[Based on responses from 50% of squadron relating to the agenda.]

Reunion Yes/No
•      All open to a reunion…but when, where, and how are deciding factors

When
•      When we can travel and gather 400+
•      50th high school reunions possible this year – they will be the priority
•      Late fall or next spring
•      Next year – too busy/medical restrictions (non-COVID)/expect spotty attendance

Where
•      USAFA best
•      AF Museum a strong option
•      Possibly in conjunction with an away football or hockey game
•      Air and Space Museum

Vaccinated/Unvaccinated
•      Vaccination should be price of admission—too many classmates vulnerable
•      Encourage vaccination/publicly push masking and social distancing
•      Stay away if sick
•      Everyone should be vaccinated by late in the year

3rd party to organize event
•      OK if cost reasonable

Volunteers
•      TBD

POC Recommendations based on inputs:
•      Initiate planning for a reunion in the spring or summer of 2022
       •      Better resolution of COVID concerns
       •      Allows more time to plan—2021 will be rushed
       •      50th high school reunions this year are a big deal
•      USAFA is preferable – consider AF Museum if AFA won’t/can’t “support”
       •      AOG might be able to assist in spring—out of normal reunion cycle
•      Vaccinations are a significant concern
       •      We have medically vulnerable classmates—some won’t attend otherwise
       •      Follow most current CDC guidance
       •      Hopefully herd immunity achieved by Spring 2022
