Larry T. “Tom” Bishop died Nov. 5, 2017, from end stage renal disease following 10 years of kidney dialysis. Tom was born in Kansas City, Mo., on April 12, 1953. In 1963, Richard and Barbara Baker added Tom to their family as a foster son, joining him with their seven biological children. Tom was very athletic and competitive and despite his small stature excelled in every sport in which he participated. He graduated from De La Salle High School in Kansas City, Mo., in 1971.

Tom’s dream was to attend the Air Force Academy and become a pilot. He achieved that dream. Tom turned down nominations to the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to accept his preference, the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 1975. He was married in the Academy Chapel in 1976 and has one son and two grandsons. Tom took flight training at Vance Air Base, Enid, Okla. He was next stationed at Shaw Air Base, Sumter, S.C., as an RF-4 pilot. In 1981-82, he served at Taegu Air Base, North Korea, with the 497 TFS.
By this time his marriage had ended and Tom chose to enter civilian life when his commitment was up. Tom worked in California in the defense industry for a number of years before returning to the Kansas City area where he worked for several employers, settling at Sprint. Failing health forced Tom’s early retirement.

Tom was extremely proud of his time at the Academy and his service in the U.S. Air Force.
After his death, a memorial service was held at St. Ann’s Church in Independence, Mo. Capt. Larry T. Bishop was laid to rest in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Mo., on Nov. 14, 2017. (Tom’s loving family)
